A Review: Garlic Effects on the Cardiovascular System | Madaj Paul M

Madaj Paul M | A Review: Garlic Effects on the Cardiovascular System Abstract Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the world. Detection as well as modification of risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been the topics research over several decades. Multiple drugs have been studied and used in clinical practice with people seeking “natural” alternatives. When evaluating for optimal treatment options and the multiple risk factors associated CAD (e.g. diabetes, hypertension, etc.), garlic can play a prominent role. Studies have shown promising results in treating hypertension, altering the lipid profile, prevention and even treatment of coronary atherosclerosis and its systemic anti-oxidant properties. Garlic also has positive effects outside the cardiovascular system (e.g. immune system). It can be used stand-alone or as an adjunct to current medical therapy. No clinically significant side effects have been r...

Hybrid Peripheral Revascularizations-Juniper Publishers

JUNIPER PUBLISHERS - OPEN ACCESS JOURNAL OF CARDIOLOGY & CARDIOVASCULAR THERAPY   Introduction In the continuously evolving efforts to provide optimum revascularization for high risk Critical Limb Ischemia patients, vascular surgeons around the world have widely adopted hybrid approach. This combination of the advantages of open and endovascular techniques allows the implementation of tailored complex multi-level reconstruction plans usually within a single setting [1-3]. What started over 40 years ago, with the combination of simple iliac angioplasty and femoro-femoral bypass [4] is gradually increasing in complexity & becoming a widely accepted therapeutic option. Furthermore, the increasing sophistication of minimally invasive endovascular techniques with successful treatment of multi-segmental lesions has contributed to a reduced morbidity & duration of hospital stay when Hybrid revascularizations are performed [5]. The final benefit thus is full revascu...

New Strategy to Prevent Acute MI in Japan-Juniper Publishers

Image
JUNIPER PUBLISHERS - OPEN ACCESS JOURNAL OF CARDIOLOGY & CARDIOVASCULAR THERAPY   Present Status of Acute MI Patients in Japan Approximately 40,000 patients die from acute myocardial infarction (MI) in Japan every year according to the data from Vital Statistics 2014 reported by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare. However, the number of patients hospitalized due to acute MI is about 69,000/year, and the in-hospital mortality of those patients is below 10% according to the data from The Japanese Registry of all cardiac and vascular Disease (JROAD) reported by the Japanese Circulation Society. Therefore, approximately 34,000 patients with acute MI die before hospitalization every year and approximately 40% of acute MI patients die after onset mainly before hospitalization. Judging from these data, we should pay more attention to how to prevent acute MI rather than to how to treat acute MI patients in hospital to save their lives. Proc...

Sequential Observation of Angio-SealTM-Induced Acute Limb Ischemia vie Angiography and Intravascular ultrasound-Juniper Publishers

JUNIPER PUBLISHERS-OPEN ACCESS JOURNAL OF CARDIOLOGY & CARDIOVASCULAR THERAPY Abstract Femoral artery stenosis and occlusions are relatively common following the use of Angio-Seal TM devices compared with other vascular closure devices (VCDs). This study reports the first such case that we could observe the absorption of the collagen plug one year after balloon angioplasty for Angio-Seal TM - induced acute limb ischemia in the angiographic and IVUS finding. A 66-year-old male with effort-induced angina pectoris underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for severe stenosis of the proximal left anterior descending artery (LAD) through a right femoral artery access. A 7 Fr, 11 cm sheath was inserted through the right femoral artery. The puncture site was closed with an 8 Fr Angio-Seal TM device after the completion of the PCI. Patient’s right popliteal artery and dorsalis pedis artery became impalpable about one hour after the procedure. Emergency angio...

Undetected pulmonary Artery Aneurysms Secondary to Prolonged Right-sided Endocarditis in a Patient with Corrected Tetralogy of Fallot-Juniper Publishers

Image
JUNIPER PUBLISHERS-OPEN ACCESS JOURNAL OF CARDIOLOGY & CARDIOVASCULAR THERAPY Abstract Mycotic pulmonary artery aneurysms are a rare complication of right-sided endocarditis most often associated with congenital heart disease or intravenous drug addiction. We report a case of undetected mycotic pulmonary artery aneurysms secondary to prolonged right-sided endocarditis in a 25-years old patient with corrected tetralogy of Fallot /pulmonary atresia. An attempt to explain the delayed diagnosis of endocarditis with subsequent mycotic aneurysms formation is made and the clinical and imaging findings of this rare complication during a long-term follow up are presented, contributing to our knowledge on the natural history of this disease. Keywords: Mycotic aneurysms; Tetralogy of Fallot /pulmonary atresia; Right heart endocarditis; Kocuria varians Abbreviations: CT: Computed Tomography; TTE: Trans Thoracic Echocardiogram; MRI: Magnetic Resonance Imaging; MRA: Magn...

PCSK9 Inhibitors or Cardiovascular Disease Inhibitors?-Juniper Publishers

Image
JUNIPER PUBLISHERS-OPEN ACCESS JOURNAL OF CARDIOLOGY & CARDIOVASCULAR THERAPY Abstract Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is well documented as the leading cause of adult mortality and morbidity worldwide and it remains a substantial public health issue with enormous financial impact to global economy. Statins remain the cornerstone of lipid management for both primary and secondary prevention of CVD. A variety of other lipid modifying therapies are available which can be added to statin therapy to further reduce CV risk. Nowadays, PCSK9 inhibitors (evolocumab and alirocumab recently approved) appear promising agents with multiple trials demonstrating that these agents -in combination with statins or monotherapy- can modify lipids substantially with an unprecedented optimal safety profile. Several large PCSK9 inhibitor clinical outcomes trials (ODYSSEY-OUTCOMES, FOURIER and the SPIRE-I and II trials) are currently ongoing, which should elucidate their place in cli...

Preoperative Serum NT-proBNP levels; Can it be a Clue About Postoperative Clinical Outcome of Patients Undergoing to Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery?-Juniper Publishers

JUNIPER PUBLISHERS-OPEN ACCESS JOURNAL OF CARDIOLOGY & CARDIOVASCULAR THERAPY Abstract Introduction: Brain natriuretic peptid (BNP) is a ventricular hormone that is sensitive and specific marker of changes in ventricular function. It is sample screening test for symptomless left ventricular failure. The aim of this study was examine there is a corelation between the preoperative plasma level of BNP and early morbidity in patients undergoing to coronary artery bypass. Materials and Method: During the 11 month period, we retrospectively evaluated 22 consecutive patients who was operated on for coronary artery bypass. Patients had not have other system and cardiac disease and had not EF ≤ 50. Preoperative plasma BNP values was statisticaly compired with early postoperative morbidity findings. BNP analysis was made by Electrohemoluminescent immunassay method and Roche Diagnostic Indianapolis, Indiana proBNP Elecsys 1010 autoanalyzer with tecnique and ≥125 pg/ml was a...
